Inlaws & Outlaws Heads to Montana!

This month, Inlaws & Outlaws heads to Big Sky Country, with three community screenings in Montana!

The Salish Kootenai College's Spirit of Many Colors Gay-Straight Alliance is holding their first annual PRIDE Week and the film kicks it off with a free community screening on Monday, May 14 at 2 pm in the college library.

]]> Later in the month, Montana Pride 2012 and the Montana Human Rights Network team up to present two screenings of the film with a special appearance by filmmaker Drew Emery at each.

On Wednesday, May 23, the film will screen at Plymouth Congregational Church in Helena. On Friday, May 25, the film screens at the Bozeman Public Library. Both screenings are free and open to the general public and a Q&A and discussion with the filmmaker will follow.

The screenings happen as the battle for LGBT rights in the state heats up, including the upcoming vote on Helena's Non-Discrimination Ordinance. If the city passes the law, it will be the second city in Montana to offer civil rights protections for LGBT Montanans. Missoula became the first in 2010.

D Gregory Smith of Montana Pride shared his excitement over the film's timeliness. "A basic understanding of the humanity of LGBT relationships is often what's missing from our discussion of LGBT rights. This film helps remedy that. No one will walk away wondering about differences - the shared humanity is obvious, and celebrated."

SIFF Cinema Hosts Our 500th Screening in Benefit for Washington United for Marriage

We've come full circle!

After 499 screenings in schools, churches, community centers and indie theatres from Oklahoma to Maine, and California to Alaska, our 500th screening, is happening right where it all began - with SIFF - or SIFF Cinema, that is.

On Thursday, March 29th join director Drew Emery and several of the film's outlaws as we celebrate this milestone at the Uptown Theatre with a benefit screening for our new partner in equality, Washington United for Marriage.

]]> Tickets are just $10 and all proceeds go to support Washington United for Marriage. Advance tickets are available online (no service charge) or at the box office at the Uptown beginning one hour prior to the show.

Washington United for Marriage is the statewide coalition that successfully shepherded Washington state's landmark equal marriage law that Governor Gregoire signed into law on February 13th of this year. Opponents of the bill have drafted a referendum challenge that will almost certainly leave the fate of marriage equality in the hands of Washington's voters this November. To build the necessary support to affirm the legislation, our common goal is to engage as many hearts and minds as we can across the state.

Love & Equality: Finally Engaged!

YES! Yesterday, we cheered Governor Christine Gregoire as she signed marriage equality into law for the state of Washington!

Today, we celebrate this hard-won victory, the long-awaited engagement of Love and Equality. (Happy Valentine's Day indeed.)

Tomorrow, we get right back to work making sure this big leap forward sticks, fighting the inevitable referendum effort to deny equal marriage at the ballot box in November.

]]> And how do we do that? We do what we've always done; we share our true stories wherever we can, spreading the gospel that love is neither gay nor straight; it's human.

Our Hearts + Minds Campaign is quickly approaching our 500th community screening of Inlaws & Outlaws!

Just this past Sunday, we brought the film to the lovely little town of Concrete, Washington (population 704). And this Sunday, the film is being presented at First UMC of Bellevue as part of the church's series Love My Neighbor. (All are welcome. Of course.)

We are determined to step up our efforts to bring Inlaws & Outlaws to many more communities across the state - but we need your help!

Inlaws & Outlaws at SnoGLOBE Film Festival

SnoGLOBE Equality Alliance will present a special screening of Inlaws & Outlaws on Sunday, January 29th at 2 pm to kick off their Winter 2012 Film Festival, Snohomish County's first LGBT film festival. The screening will be presented at Everett PUD Theatre in Everett, Washington.

]]> Following a community social that begins at 1 pm, Seattle filmmaker Drew Emery will be on hand to introduce the film and join the audience for a Q&A and discussion after. SnoGLOBE's inaugural program showcases three films that draw attention to the lives and hearts of LGBTQ people. In addition to Inlaws & Outlaws, the Festival includes the locally-produced short 2011 Web Cam Confessions: Voices of GLOBE Youth, as well as the feature Out In America.

Inlaws & Outlaws Headlines Q Center Benefit

Syracuse New York's AIDS Community Resources presents Inlaws & Outlaws at their 1st Annual eQuality Film Fest to benefit The Q Center. The festival features three gay-themed films in one day at the Palace Theatre on James on Sunday, October 9th, with Inlaws & Outlaws the centerpiece film at 4:30 pm. All proceeds will benefit the Q Center at ACR, a safe and creative space for all LGBTQ youth, their allies and parents.

]]> In addition, filmmaker Drew Emery returns to his hometown of Syracuse to join VIP guests at a reception prior to the film and a Q&A with the audience after. "I'm really honored to be part of this wonderful day," said Emery. "Nothing makes me happier than to see so much progress happen where I grew up. Anything I can do to help the Q Center take that progress further, I'm there."

The festival will feature live music and - a first ever - a wedding on the Palace stage. Louise and Marie Tyo of Potsdam won a fundraising raffle that includes a free wedding, reception, cake, rings, photos, music, limousine and a two-night getaway. For the past ten years on this same weekend, Louise and Marie have been getting married in their church and this year they get to make it legal. All are welcome to join us for this party.

Event organizer Moe Harrington O'Neill added that "this event is our gift to the community to come together and celebrate the passing of the Marriage Equality Act in NY. We all love and we all love movies!"

In addition to general admission tickets and festival passes, VIP tickets for the Fest are available for $50 and include admission to all films with free popcorn, access to the VIP room with food and bar and a special meeting with Drew Emery.

About the Q Center:

The Q Center is a safe and creative space for LGBTQ youth, their allies and parents. We provide educational support, free counseling, community outreach and support groups for the youth as well as their parents. HIV/AIDS prevention education, awareness and testing is also provided. We house a Cyber Center, a library and provide much needed social events. We have just successfully completed our first all day summer program (lunch provided), which included day trips, workshops and community building skills. We are the only center of its kind within a 75 mile radius and with increased numbers of assault and suicide statistics, our continued programming is imperative.

Equality Texas Hosts Fundraiser With Film

Equality Texas will present a benefit screening of the award-winning documentary Inlaws & Outlaws on Wednesday, August 24th, at 6:30 pm at the Cinemark West Plano in Plano, Texas (North of Parker, East side of Tollway).

]]> This event is the North Texas Premiere of Inlaws & Outlaws and is being presented by Jeanne S. Rubin and Lisa R. Mashigian to benefit Equality Texas. This week Inlaws & Outlaws kicks off a series of free community screenings of the film hosted by UCC churches in Seattle.

In November, we had our 400th community screening of the film -- half of which happened in welcoming congregations of several different faiths and denominations.

]]> Community organizations, schools, congregations and equality groups have joined our Hearts + Minds Campaign by using the film to build support for equality on the grassroots level. Now with our Equality Deal, any individual activist or organization can host the film for free -- while earning money for their cause.

The four Seattle screenings are a pilot program for a national series of screenings at UCC churches sponsored by Bob Lemon of Oklahoma City.

Wow. Tonight, we presented our 400th community screening of Inlaws & Outlaws!

Congratulations Pete-e, Jane, John, Frank, Dayna, Tammy, Leslie, Heather, John, Susan, Aubree, Laramie and the rest of our fearless Outlaws! Much to our delight, your stories are still going strong, still empowering communities, still enriching congregations, and still very much moving the ball forward inch by inch in our effort to change hearts and minds across the country.

]]> Tonight is also the kick-off off our six-city Virginia Outlaws Tour here at Virginia Tech. It's the sixth annual Gay in Appalachia and a fantastic crowd showed up to celebrate.

What's also exciting is that we have a pretty good idea of where the next 400 screenings are coming from:

Introducing our Equality Deal, a fantastic way to let anyone screen the film for free — while raising a little money for their own efforts to create change. In a nutshell, any activist, school, congregation, non-profit or Equality organization can buy a reduced price package of DVDs, sell them at their screening for full price, make back all their money and keep the difference for their cause.

Oh, and we give them the screening license for free.

We think it's a pretty cool way to empower the grassroots while making sure our stories get told to even more audiences.

Beginning October 28th, the first leg of our Virginia Outlaws Tour brings Inlaws & Outlaws back to six cities in Virginia —
from Blacksburg to Williamsburg.

Filmmaker Drew Emery kicks off the tour with the Hearts + Minds Campaign's 400th community screening at the 6th Annual Gay in Appalachia gathering at Virginia Tech.

]]> "This tour is so important to me," says Emery. "I went to school in Virginia, fell in love with Virginia and came out in Virginia." He notes that, given the current state of the gay rights movement in Virginia, the tour is both timely and topical.

"On one hand, there's been terrific progress towards the understanding of gay & lesbian people in so many places throughout the state. On the other hand, there remains a concerted effort to deny basic civil rights to LGBT people and, sadly, that effort is now being lead by the state's own governor and attorney general. Groups like Equality Virginia make a huge impact but, in order to succeed, they need a broader level of support from the community-at-large. That's what the Hearts + Minds Campaign is designed to do — bring the stories of Inlaws & Outlaws directly into communities to spark dialogue and inspire change."

Mayor McGinn Hosts Hearts + Minds Benefit

On February 28th, Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn co-hosted a benefit screening of Inlaws & Outlaws at Central Cinema in Seattle. The event raised over $7,500 for the Hearts + Minds Campaign - ensuring that the film will continue to help create change by partnering with community organizations across Washington and the nation.

]]> Mayor McGinn spoke passionately about the central role that both citizen activism and the arts plays in Seattle life. He and his wife Peggy Lynch afterwards gave the film a big thumbs up! Co-host JJ McKay then joined director Drew Emery in emceeing a non-auction where participants pledged contributions and earned chances to win prizes.
Galerias Restaurant on Capitol Hill and Geraldine's Counter of Columbia City were among those contributing prizes. The Grand Prize -- a private screening of the film for 50, including the director and champagne - was won by Buster Edwards and Joe Madsen.

Among participants in the festivities were Col. Grethe Cammermeyer (Ret.) and some of the film's star subjects, Tammy Snow & Dayna Tolman, Frank Chaffee & John Gliessman, and Pete-e Petersen & Jane Abbot Lighty. Two lucky audience members walked home with a jar each of Pete-e and Jane's homemade jam. Approximate value: priceless.

To mark this year's Freedom to Marry Week, the True Stories Project has donated fifteen screenings of Inlaws & Outlaws to fifteen allied organizations throughout the country — from Friday, February 5th through Valentine's Day, Sunday, February 14th.
