Over 100 of our friends and fans have made tax-deductible contributions, large and small, to bring our current total to $42,056! With support of The Faygele ben Miriam Fund, our first major underwriter, and now Bob Lemon, our Executive Producer, our goal is tantalizingly close at hand.

What's the money for?

Public TV is free to all viewers but there are no ads to pay producers for their programs — and the cost of broadcasting them. Underwriting makes that possible. Your support will pay for vital post-production for broadcast, closed captioning, station relations and more. It also pays for production of our new short piece Just Marriage, which will follow the film as part of its public TV presentation. We could really use your help in getting to our goal.

Yes, we've made great progress in the fight for equality. And we think having our stories told has made all the difference in the world. Time after time we've seen that once people know someone gay — and hear their story — they're far more likely to support equal rights.

And that includes the freedom to marry.

Changing Hearts + Minds

<span style="font-size: 1.2em; font-style: bold; line-height: 1.4em";>"Our church screening was a huge success! I feel inspired to act in the name of gay marriage & simply to love BIG TIME." — Amy, Seattle WA

We want to make sure that — before they vote — everyone in Washington knows what's at stake with Referendum 74. So we're teaming up with Washington United for Marriage to offer Inlaws & Outlaws screenings FREE to anyone in Washington state who wants to help us reach as many people as possible with our stories.

Between now and Election Day, you, your organization, congregation or school can host a screening of Inlaws & Outlaws in support of Referendum 74. Showing the film is a great way to bring the issue of marriage equality to your friends, family and co-workers in a non-political, non-confrontational way. In fact, we'll make sure it's fun.

Plus, if you want, you can use the event to raise money for your organization.

How does it work?

We provide the film.

You provide the projector and space.

We work together to build an audience.

After the film, we have an opportunity to engage the audience on what they can do to help pass Referendum 74.

Through our Hearts + Minds Campaign, we’ve already set up over 500 community screenings, so we know how to keep it simple — and fun.

Want to join us in supporting Ref 74? Here's the drill:

Sign up here! Find a space, pick a date and time, and then register your event right here on our website.

We'll then build you a nifty web page to help promote your event.

We send you a DVD, no charge — plus everything you and your audience need to know about Referendum 74.

You download free posters and flyers to customize, print out and promote your event.

Optional: if you want to raise money, we'll also send you DVDs to sell at your screening. You send us any extras and half the money to cover our expenses. You keep the other half to cover yours — or you can donate it however you'd like.

This is a great way to share true stories of same-sex couples with friends and family who might be on the fence about Referendum 74. We're confident that sharing Inlaws & Outlaws in your community can go a long way to ensuring that Washington is the first state where voters approve equal marriage.

Not in Washington but want to do your part?

Like 500 other churches, temples, schools and community organizations before you, you can still host a screening. We recommend our Equality Deal.

This campaign doesn't end in Washington. We're in this for the long haul.

The opportunity to bring our true stories to an audience exponentially bigger is simply too big to pass up. So we asked for your help in getting us there and, so far, the response has been tremendous.

We're almost halfway to our goal of raising $50,000 by Sept 30!

That's support, large and small, from over 35 more of our friends and fans, bringing our total raised to $23,825!

One gift that really made a difference came from the The Faygele ben Miriam Fund, our first major underwriter. Given Ben-Miriam's own remarkable story of activism for LGBT equality, we couldn't be more honored to receive the support.

But we still have a way to go before we meet our deadline!

Public TV isn't paid for by ads — and it's free to all viewers. That's why we need underwriting to make this big leap possible. Your support will pay for vital post-production for broadcast, closed captioning, station relations and more. If you haven't contributed, we could really use your help in getting to our goal in less than three weeks.

A gift of any size will make a difference!

Changing Hearts + Minds

"GREAT film changed my stupid mindset." — Stephanie, La Conner WA

"Scott, my husband, and I were so moved. I feel inspired to act in the name of gay marriage and simply to love BIG TIME."
— Amy, Seattle WA

Slowly but surely, the public is coming around to the realization that love is neither gay nor straight; it's human.

But this evolution hasn't happened on it's own. Greater visibility through having our stories told has made all the difference in the world. Time after time we've seen that once people know someone gay — and hear their story — they're far more likely to support equal rights.

And that includes the freedom to marry.

<img src="/images/faygele_news150.jpg" alt="John Singer"style="float: left; margin: 0 12px 12px 0;" />We're proud to announce that we've received our first foundation support in our underwriting drive for the public television distribution of Inlaws & Outlaws — the Faygele ben Miriam Fund. This $5,000 grant helps us make a big leap towards our goal of raising $50,000 by September 30th — and making the film available to all 350+ PBS stations in the U.S.

For the Hearts + Minds Campaign, the gift is more than financial; it is an honor to present work that builds on the legacy of the fund's namesake, Faygele ben Miriam. As recounted in a terrific article by Eli Sanders for Tablet, for more than 40 years until his death in 2000, ben Miriam was a visionary leader in the struggle for LGBT equality and other progressive causes. In 1971, when he was known as John Singer, he and fellow activist Paul Barwick filed for a marriage license in King County, beginning Washington state's long march toward marriage equality that culminates with this year's Referendum 74.

"As trustees of the Fund, Lois Thetford and I are proud to support this opportunity to propel Drew's courageous and moving film, Inlaws & Outlaws, onto a national public stage."

— Michael Hanrahan

"Working as a typist or secretary most of his life, Faygele never made much money," recalled Michael Hanrahan, a ben Miriam Fund trustee. "But when the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission fired him for wearing a dress to work and openly professing his homosexuality, he pursued his case to the U.S. Supreme Court and was ultimately reinstated with back pay and damages. With the funds that remained upon his death from AIDS in 2000, he established the Faygele ben Miriam Fund to provide seed money for grass roots equity, social justice and cultural work that affirms the lives of gay men, lesbians and other oppressed people."

Evan Wolfson, of Freedom to Marry and author of Why Marriage Matters put Faygele's legacy in perspective: "[He] was part of that first wave of couples challenging the unjust and unfair denial of the freedom to marry. And he spoke for millions, at a time when, in some respects, gay people were just beginning to speak for full inclusion and the right to be let in, not just left alone."

Faygele was an inveterate organizer and meeting goer. He notoriously insisted, however, that meetings be productive. And to that end he always brought his knitting. Here he is pictured with an afghan he crafted as a gift to a friend during a series of interminable meetings that focused on Jewish support for the people of Palestine.

That means that, if we act quickly, the film will be made available to virtually all public television stations in the US this Fall - including over 350+ PBS affiliates!

This is huge!

Public TV reaches over 117 million viewers a week. If we slice off even a modest amount of that, we'll bring Inlaws & Outlaws to a much, much larger audience than it's ever had. Just as same-sex marriage has finally arrived centerstage with President Obama's support, we have the opportunity to reach millions of households with true stories we know change hearts & minds.

But to meet our deadline, we need your help — and we need it now!
Donate

We need our first $50,000 in underwriting by the end of September. Your support will pay for vital post-production for broadcast, closed captioning, station relations and more. Can you help?

We have a huge opportunity to reach millions of households with true stories we know can change hearts & minds...

"GREAT film changed my stupid mindset." — Stephanie, La Conner WA

"Scott, my husband, and I were so moved.
As you probably know, public TV isn't paid for by ads. Corporations, foundations and "viewers like you" are who make it all possible. We're scrambling now to seek out underwriting from foundations and corporations who understand the potential of bringing these stories to living rooms all over the country — but that effort takes time.

We don't want to miss the window of getting Inlaws & Outlaws on TV before November, so we turn to viewers like you — the community that made the film possible and brought us to 500+ community screenings with our Hearts + Minds Campaign.

We can do this. There has never been a better time than to share our stories with the mainstream. Time after time we've seen that once people know someone gay — and hear their story — folks are far more likely to support equal rights. And that includes the freedom to marry.

UPDATE!

[9-5-12] Wow! So far, our early efforts are being met with tremendous support! As of today, we've now raised $13,450 towards our goal of $50,000 by the end of September. Can you help us reach that goal? Any amount will make a difference.

Later in the month, Montana Pride 2012 and the Montana Human Rights Network team up to present two screenings of the film with a special appearance by filmmaker Drew Emery at each.

On Wednesday, May 23, the film will screen at Plymouth Congregational Church in Helena. On Friday, May 25, the film screens at the Bozeman Public Library. Both screenings are free and open to the general public and a Q&A and discussion with the filmmaker will follow.

The screenings happen as the battle for LGBT rights in the state heats up, including the upcoming vote on Helena's Non-Discrimination Ordinance. If the city passes the law, it will be the second city in Montana to offer civil rights protections for LGBT Montanans. Missoula became the first in 2010.

D Gregory Smith of Montana Pride shared his excitement over the film's timeliness. "A basic understanding of the humanity of LGBT relationships is often what's missing from our discussion of LGBT rights. This film helps remedy that. No one will walk away wondering about differences - the shared humanity is obvious, and celebrated."
