Mayor McGinn Hosts Hearts + Minds Benefit

On February 28th, Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn co-hosted a benefit screening of Inlaws & Outlaws at Central Cinema in Seattle. The event raised over $7,500 for the Hearts + Minds Campaign - ensuring that the film will continue to help create change by partnering with community organizations across Washington and the nation. -
Freedom to Marry Week 2010

Oklahoma Honors Executive Producer Bob Lemon

In the years since he told his story in Inlaws & Outlaws, my friend Chuck Lazenby shared his humor, wisdom and good spirit with many thousands of people.
On Thursday, September 17th, Chuck Lazenby passed away after a long illness. He was 78 years old.
I first met Chuck in 2002 at an open call for The Bridge, an inter-generational oral history project I was working on with the as-yet-unopened Seattle LGBT Community Center.

In Washington, Focus on the Family and other anti-gay organizations are trying to undo that state's recently passed domestic partnership law by trying to stop the approval of Referendum 71. -

Hate Crime Victim To Be Memorialized With Screening

On July 10, activists in Bangor, Maine are marking the 25th anniversary of the hate crime murder of 23-year-old Charlie Howard with a week-long series of events, including a community screening of Inlaws & Outlaws.On July 7, 1984, Charlie Howard was murdered by three teenagers while walking home with a friend. Taunted and beaten, Charlie was thrown off a bridge into the Kenduskeag Stream twenty feet below. His body was recovered hours later. At the time, many in Bangor tried to downplay the murder, with some essentially blaming Charlie for his own death because he had dared to live as openly gay.

Prop 8 Upheld -- Inlaws & Outlaws Fights Back!

Commentary: Today the California Supreme Court voted to uphold Prop 8, the ballot measure that denies gay & lesbian couples their right to marry in the nation's largest state.

Despite all the forward momentum in recently in Iowa, Maine and New Hampshire, we've always known that the struggle for full equality would be long and hard fought.

San Francisco Vigil for Marriage Equality

On the eve of this historic election, we're proud to offer a free screening of Inlaws & Outlaws to the San Francisco Unitarian Universalists as they present an all-day Wedding Vigil for marriage equality.
The vigil is Monday, November 3 at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 1187 Franklin Street (at Geary), San Francisco. The vigil begins with a musical celebration on the front steps at 7 pm, followed by services in the sanctuary, a candle-light procession, and then the film at 8:30 pm. -
Producers Guild Hosts Screening in San Francisco

KCTS Hosts Free Community Screening

Seattle PBS affiliate KCTS 9 is hosting a free community screening of Inlaws & Outlaws on Wednesday, May 14, at their studios. A panel discussion and reception will follow the screening and be taped for later broadcast. Featured on the panel will be director Drew Emery and two of the subjects of the film, Heather Andersen and Leslie Christian. Andersen and Christian were named plaintiffs in the Andersen v. Sims marriage equality case decided by the Washington Supreme Court in 2006.

Movie Tour Heads to New England!

The second leg of the Inlaws & Outlaws Movie Tour takes the film to theatres, schools and communities all over New England starting Thursday, March 27 with a special presentation of the film at the illustrious Music Hall in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Joining director Drew Emery at the Music Hall will be Bishop Gene Robinson, the first and only openly gay bishop of the Episcopal Church, and bishop of the New Hampshire Diocese. Bishop Robinson and Emery will hold an audience discussion following the Wild Card Series showing of the film at the Music Hall.

A year ago, Ravenna United Methodist Church decided to become an open and affirming church. But Pastor Dan Shelley wanted to make this change visible to both his congregation and the larger neighborhood. So he decided to host a screening of Inlaws & Outlaws in the main chapel. -
Outlaws Lead Seattle Pride Parade

Pete-e Petersen, Jane Lighty & Chuck Lazenby led the Seattle Pride Parade on June 24th. Huge crowds turned out to watch what is hotly being billed as Seattle's best Pride Parade to date.
The Inlaws & Outlaws Celebrity Grand Marshals were rapturously received as they made their way along 4th Ave. to Seattle Center for PrideFest.
In June 2006, Pete-e & Jane also led the Oklahoma City Pride Parade as Grand Marshals.

June 21st.The article focused on the stories of Pete-e Petersen, Jane Lighty and Chuck Lazenby; the three stars of the film who are appearing as Celebrity Grand Marshals in this years Seattle Pride Parade (June 24th). The film was praised for its honest portrayal of heart-warming stories.

Grethe Cammermeyer in Flag Day Honor

On June 14th, Colonel Grethe Cammermeyer joined Drew Emery and stars of the film for the Seattle Theatrical Premiere at the Cinerama.Cammermeyer shot to fame in 1994, after she challenged the US Military's anti-gay policy; a challenge which was immortalized in the movie Serving in Silence where Grethe was played by Glenn Close.
At the end of the show, Grethe presented Chuck Lazenby witha US flag in honor of his deceased partner, David Asplund. David proudly served his country during World War II, only to be denied a US Flag upon his death, as Chuck was not recognized as family. -

On April 28th, 2007, Inlaws & Outlaws makes its Indiana Premiere at the upcoming Indianapolis International Film Festival. Stay tuned for more screenings with our upcoming Indiana Outlaws Tour, a collaboration with the Indiana Coalition on Non-Discriminationn (ICON).
On May 5th and 6th, 2007, Inlaws & Outlaws plays at the Rainier Independent Film Festival in Ashford, WA. Tickets are available here.

Celebrating Equality Day!

Inlaws & Outlaws joined Equal Rights Washington and the Religious Coalition for Equality in bringing the film to Olympia, WA during 2007 Equality Day on February 26th!
People from all over Washington gathered on the steps of the state capitol to rally for equality of Washington's gay lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people.

During the rally Pete-E Peterson and Jane Lighty, stars of the film, recieved a marriage certificate from the Rev. Stephen Jones pastor of Seattle First Baptist Church, and co-conveener of RCE.
After the rally Inlaws & Outlaws was screened to a great crowd at the Capitol Theatre, a great way to wrap up Equality Day in Olympia!

The GSBA joined us as we kicked-off our Hearts + Minds Campaign at the Broadway Performance Hall on Friday, February 23rd. After a reception with the director and the film’s subjects, comic Peggy Platt hosted a private screening of “Inlaws & Outlaws” followed by an auction to benefit the Hearts + Minds Campaign. Kate Beck of the GSBA won our Grand Prize: a trip for 2 to L.A. for our world premiere at the Sunset 5 Theatres, Thursday, May 3rd! Read more about it here.

Inlaws & Outlaws Wins deadCENTER Fest Grand Jury Award

On June 11th, 2006, director Drew Emery accepted the Oklahoma City festival's highest honor (top right photo). The excitement surrounding the festival show led to an added engagement during Oklahoma City Pride Fest the following month. (Read the full story here.)
Thanks to the grassroots effort of local churches, community leaders, Pride Fest organizers and an Outlaws Posse of volunteers, the film returned June 22nd through 25th for a successful four-day run. Additionally, Emery, along with two of the film's stars, Pete-e Petersen and Jane Lighty (bottom right photo), served as Grand Marshalls in the annual Pride Parade. Thanks to everyone in Oklahoma City for two amazing weekends!
